Since the start of school on Aug. 19, Windsor's FFA chapter has been working hard to kick off a great new year filled with many incredible opportunities. Even before school started, the 2013-14 officer team — Cole Mills, president; Bowe Colohan, vice president; Rhianna Berris, secretary; Mackenzie Bigler, treasurer; Sheryl Brewer, reporter; Alex Loeffelholz, sentinel; Rae Roache, historian; and Carissa Weber and Michaela Overton, executive committee — was hard at work all the way back in early July to plan the year's events.

The officers met at American Ag Credit in Greeley in early July for leadership workshops with their advisers, Jarrod Bessire and Melinda Spaur. They also worked hard to plan the chapter's events. With one day of work, they had one day of play. The advisers treated the officer team to lunch at Hu Hot in Fort Collins and bowling at Chipper's Lanes. This gave the students an opportunity to bond before the busy school year came around.

The chapter started the new year by helping out the Bulls on the Beach Rodeo committee. They helped park cars both days of the event to help cut the cost of attending the FFA National Convention — held in late October — for their state-winning Parliamentary Procedure team.

In the week before Labor Day weekend, the busy bees worked hard to complete a float for the annual Harvest Festival Parade, as well as getting back into the classroom groove. After the craziness that ensued with the Labor Day weekend, the students prepared for the Annual Chapter Ice Breaker held at Windsor High School on Sept. 18.

FFA National Convention was held Oct. 28-Nov. 2 in Louisville, Ky. Seventeen students from Windsor's FFA chapter attended the convention to compete at Parliamentary Procedure, attend sessions with motivational speakers and attended leadership workshops. During their down time, the students had the opportunity to tour Churchill Downs, home of the famous Kentucky Derby, visit the Louisville Slugger Factory, and take a riverboat tour on the Ohio River. The Parliamentary Procedure team — Stephen Gibbens, Cole Mills, Nicole Fischer, Rachel Winter, Cody Roth, and Clay Cochran — earned silver in the national competition.

Chapter Speaking Night was held at WHS on Nov. 6 with three events — FFA Creed speaking, Extemporaneous Public Speaking and Prepared Public Speaking. Two students, placing first and second, moved on to districts. District 12 Speaking Night was held a week later at Windsor High School where students from Roosevelt, Valley, Saint-Vrain Valley, Estes Park and Windsor competed in the same three public speaking events.

Kaitlyn Carson placed first in the Creed speaking contest and will be representing the Windsor FFA chapter at State Convention in late May. Brianna McBride followed close behind and placed third, earning gold. Clay Cochran placed third in the extemporaneous speaking event, earning gold, and Jake Wiedeman earned silver. Sheryl Brewer placed third in the prepared speaking contest, earning gold, and Cole Mills earned bronze.

Overall, the Windsor FFA has had a wonderful start to the 2013-14 school year and is hard at work to prepare for their next big event.
