In a few weeks boxes will pop up around town asking people to help support the Windsor High School marching band by donating gently used athletic shoes that will go to developing countries in need.

Windsor High School's marching band got new shoes this year and instead of disposing of them, they decided to see what uses others might have, Liane Weinberger, Windsor Music Booster chairwoman of fundraising, said Wednesday.

Starting Sept. 18 and going through Oct. 16 people can donate used athletic shoes and in October the marching band with box up to donated shoes, along with their old marching band shoes, and ship them off to Angel Bins. In turn, Angel Bins will pay the marching band $1.50 per pound of donated shoes and ship them to developing countries that have a need for good shoes, she said.

"It's a win-win for us," Weinberger said.

The fundraiser does not cost anything, after all most people usually have an old pair of athletic shoes lying around somewhere that they don't wear anymore or that someone grew out of, she said. And the donations go to help people who need them.

All shoes need to be adult sized, gently used with their soles intact and free of holes or tears, Weinberger said. They also cannot accept shoes with metal spikes or tips.

"Think of them as the only pair of shoes that a person will have to wear for a year," she said.

Once the boxes go out to business in mid September, members of the marching band will work with the business to maintain the boxes and pick up donations.

Finally, come Oct. 19, the whole band will work together to package all the donations before shipping them off.
