Several Windsor FFA Chapter students won awards at the 2014 State FFA Convention from May 27-30 at Adams State University in Alamosa.
Windsor resident Randy Schwalm was awarded the Honorary State FFA Degree for his continued years of service and commitment to the Colorado FFA Association. The Honorary State FFA Degree is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an individual from the Colorado FFA
Nicole Fischer, WHS graduate of 2013, was elected to the 2014-2015 Colorado FFA State Officer Team. She was elected as an executive committee member. Fischer will take a year off from Northeastern Junior College to serve the Colorado FFA Association. She will travel across the state making FFA Chapter visits, she will attend leadership training conferences and conventions and will also represent the FFA at the Colorado State Fair and the National Western Stock Show. Fischer will attend numerous chapter banquets, competitions and will facilitate many community service activities at the state level.
Kaitlyn Carson and Alex Grimes both won the FFA Agriscience Fair in the junior and senior categories, respectively. They will now go on to represent Colorado at the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Ky., in October. Carson was also a recipient of a silver placing in the FFA Creed Speaking competition. Alex Grimes (Veterinary Science), Corey Winter (Turf Grass Management) and Rachel Winter (Agriculture Education) were state winners in the Colorado FFA Proficiency Awards. Students complete an application based upon their SAE (Supervised Agriculture Experience) project. Hundreds of applications are judged and ranked in each of the categories. All three Windsor FFA members received $350 apiece and will also represent Colorado FFA at the National FFA contest in October.
The Windsor FFA Quiz Bowl team reached the semifinals in the Colorado FFA Quiz Bowl competition. Team members were Brianna McBride, Carson and Rachel Wildman. Also receiving recognition were Cody Roth and Fischer for obtaining a scholarship from the National and Colorado FFA Organization. Four Windsor FFA members received their State FFA Degree. Sheryl Brewer, Alex Loeffelholz, Rhianna Berris and Cole Mills qualified for the honor and were confirmed at the convention.
There were 17 students and FFA advisers Melinda Spaur and Jarrod Bessire who attended the convention. Among the awards and recognition, the Windsor FFA Chapter still managed to visit a solar energy field and the Great Sand Dunes. The chapter enjoyed a free historic train ride from Alamosa to Monte Vista.
Students also attended the Chris Cagle concert, which was exclusively for Colorado FFA members.
Finally, the chapter members attended leadership workshops, saw motivational speakers and were an integral part in deciding pending business for the Colorado FFA organization.
