Doing Business in Windsor: 22-year-old following her passion by starting candle business

Christian Heggins sits in a Windsor coffee shop with the candles she created for her new business, Libra Rising.

Christian Heggins, a 22-year-old from Brush, was studying biomedical sciences at Colorado State University when she started to realize it wasn't for her.

She began to feel depressed, so she took a chance and decided to start over. She started Libra Rising, a candle business, last winter.

Heggins always had a love of candles, but it was still scary to quit her job and school and try to turn her hobby into a business. But Heggins said she knew she had to do what was right for her.

The process of starting her own business has been challenging. Learning about tax laws was the hardest part so far, Heggins said.

"I didn't realize what I was getting myself into," she said. "But I'm not a quitter."

But her work in hotels and restaurants has helped prepare her to stand up for herself, Heggins said, and learn how to run a business.

Now she gets to spend time focused on the candles she enjoys.

Heggins makes five different candles based on five planets: the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars.

They're the five personal planets in astrology, Heggins said, and she wanted to inspire people to investigate astrology as they enjoy the scents of her candles. The fragrances she chose mirror the energy she believes each planet represents.

Mars, she said is a warrior planet, and, according to her website, is associated with willpower, passion and courage. So the scents of apple, maple, vanilla and bourbon should help the people inhaling the smells feel that energy, Heggins said.

The name of her business is also from astrology, as her rising sign is Libra. The name Libra Rising just seemed to fit, she said.

The candles are made from beeswax, which Heggins melts from small beads into liquid.

She then adds different blends of herbs and spices, which she prepares in a tea bag, and lets them steep to dye the candles. The herbs help add fragrance, but she adds more if she needs to.

So far, since creating her formulas for each candle, she's made two batches and is preparing to start her third. Each batch has 55 pounds of wax, she said, which she uses to make 40 large candles, 30 medium, and several small votive-size candles.

Some she leaves plain, she said, in case clients just want beeswax without other scents added.

Although she's currently working out of her boyfriend's parents' basement in Windsor, Heggins said she hopes to open a store, but she's not sure where yet.

For now, her candles are available for purchase online.

She hopes to start attending fairs and farmers markets in the area as well.

Heggins said she has plenty of challenges ahead as she continues her business, but choosing her passion was the right path.

"I'm a million times happier," she said.
