Municipal Elections guide: Who’s running for what spots across Weld County

Dozens of candidates Tuesday will await results of municipal elections across Weld County, but the two towns with the most hotly contested elections sit within shouting distance.

Johnstown and Milliken have 19 candidates squaring off for eight total seats on the towns' respective town councils.

"I think it's something in the air," said Milliken Mayor Beau Woodcock, who isn't up for election.

Milliken's town board recently approved the town's first recreational marijuana store, but Woodcock isn't convinced the surge of candidates is connected to that decision, despite a decent amount of public outcry.

In Johnstown, the town council approved $6 million for improvements to the Colo. 402 and Interstate 25 interchange, as well as $25 million for a recreation center in the town. The debt-free community will pay cash in both cases, and neither decision seemed especially controversial.

So the 10 candidates for four trustee positions in Johnstown is kind of a head-scratcher to council member and candidate Troy Mellon, as well.

In past elections, it would have been a good problem to have — 65 candidates running for municipal office means more voices in local government and fewer headaches when it comes to filling positions.

Eaton, LaSalle and Pierce are in that boat, with each of those entities canceling elections and LaSalle soon to be seeking applicants for vacant positions on the town board.

Meet your candidates.
