North Colorado Medical Center earned a five-star rating from Healthgrades, Banner Health announced Wednesday.

"I think hospitals across the country always anticipate that release," said spokesman for NCMC Gene Haffner.

Healthgrades is an independent online resource that helps people find doctors and hospitals, a news release stated. The Healthgrades 2017 Report to the Nation evaluates about 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 34 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.

"It's meaningful to us because it's an independent rating system," Haffner said. "They aren't awards you can apply for or purchase."

A five-star rating says clinical outcomes are better than expected when treating a condition or performing a procedure being evaluated, the release stated.

NCMC was named one of America's 100 best hospitals in pulmonary care 2017 for the fifth consecutive year, according to the release. Healthgrades also recognized NCMC with a Critical Care Excellence 2017 award. Earlier this year, it also named NCMC a recipient of a Healthgrades America's 50 Best Hospitals 2016 award.

"It speaks highly of their commitment to providing the best care that we can to residents and those in the service area," Haffner said.

The group gave NCMC the critical care excellence award and gave a five-star rating for its treatment of heart attacks, strokes, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, pneumonia, sepsis, respiratory failure and small intestine surgeries.

Haffner credited the concerted effort of staff to document pre-existing conditions, better communication and facility upgrades for the ratings.

"When you combine the experience and credentials of the physicians and staff, the latest technology and the commitment to documentation for interdisciplinary care, it reflects in the data that's analyzed," Haffner said.

McKee Medical Center in Loveland, another Banner Health hospital, also earned five stars in treatment of heart failure, respiratory failure, gastrointestinal bleeds and pulmonary embolisms.
