September garden workshops set

The town of Windsor will hold free garden-themed workshops at the Treasure Island Demonstration Garden during the month of September, according to a news release from the town.

Workshops and events for the month of September include the following, according to the release:

 9-10 a.m. Sept. 6: "Late Garden Enhancement" — Weld County Master Gardener Jen Ottenhoff will talk about keeping the garden attractive as plants go to seed and prepare for winter.

 10-11 a.m. Sept. 9: "Ending the Season" — It's time to hang up the shovel, gather the seeds, and wrap the roses. In this workshop, Weld County Master Gardener Janene Willey will cover how to prepare your garden for winter. Please bring a chair, hat, sunscreen and a water bottle.

 9-10 a.m. Sept. 20: "Putting the Garden to Bed" — Gina Solanyk, Weld County master gardener, will show how to prepare for winter — how to lift tubers and store, as well as general clean up before the weather turns.

The Treasure Island Demonstration Garden features hundreds of plants that flourish in Windsor and is open to the public, according to the release. Volunteers maintain the garden on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon during the growing season. No experience is necessary, however interested volunteers are asked to attend a training session at 9 a.m. Sept. 6, and 20, at the Treasure Island Demonstration Garden.

The garden is open for public viewing from sunrise to sunset, and is located adjacent to Laku Lake Road, along the Poudre River Trail, south of Eastman Park. Roadside parking is available via the 7th Street entrance. Most of the garden is accessible with paved surfaces.
