Lyle D. Hettinger

Lyle D. Hettinger, 80, passed away April 1, 2018, at Select Specialty Hospital in Kansas City, Kan.
He was born on May 20, 1937, to Leona (Jacoby) Hettinger and Henry D. Hettinger of Windsor.

Lyle Hettinger graduated from Windsor High School in 1955. Lyle was in the U.S. Navy, submarine tender from (1955-1959). He married Bonnie B. Mitchell in 1970, and they had two children but later divorced.
He attended Colorado State College –now University of Northern Colorado, then Colorado University-Boulder. Lyle taught high school German in Worland, Wyo. for one year and then taught at Montana State University in Bozeman. He moved to Lawrence, Kan., to pursue his doctorate in German literature, and was A.B.D. (all but the dissertation). For Lyle, education was life-long journey. He was always learning through voracious reading and research. In May of 1988, Lyle married Sharon L. Simons, in Lawrence, Kan.
He was multi-lingual, a purveyor of hymnody, and he never met a stranger, as he loved learning about everyone and their stories. Lyle had a keen sense of humor and loved word play. Lyle also loved his dogs, and they each had a special place in his heart. Known for his thirst for knowledge and his kind and gentle ways, this homebody also enjoyed Vermont treks in presidential election years, and annual visits to Colorado and Michigan to visit family.
In Lawrence, he worked for and retired from K-Mart Distribution Center as a food safety inspector. Following retirement he continued working for Manpower, especially Del Monte.
Lyle is survived by his wife, Sharon L. (Simons) Hettinger of Lawrence, Kan.; mother, Leona Hettinger of Windsor; children, Michael (Cheryl Yemen) Hettinger of Brampton, Ontario, Canada, and Timothy (Susan Lee) Hettinger, Ozone Park, N.Y.; brothers, Charles Hettinger of Greeley and Ronald Hettinger of Windsor.
He was preceded in death by his father, Henry D. Hettinger.
A memorial service for Lyle was at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 7, 2018, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 2104 Bob Billings Parkway, Lawrence, Kan. 66049.
