Jim Hartshorn, a member of Greeley's American Legion Post 18, said even with a Friday schedule crowded with breakfasts, lunches, church services and flag etiquette classes, the legion's members will do their best to attend the annual Veterans' Day Ceremony 11 a.m. at Bittersweet Park, at 35th Avenue and 16th Street.

That ceremony is sponsored by the Veteran's Memorial Committee and will take place at the Veterans' Memorial inside the park, according to the committee's co-chairman, Stan Cass.

Cass said this year's ceremony will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, and it will feature a special memorial for the 28 Weld County soldiers who died during the conflict. Maj. Gen. H. Michael Edwards, the Adjutant General for Colorado, will speak at the event. The Brentwood Middle School band and the Greeley Chorale will perform as well.

"It's a salute especially to those older veterans," Hartshorn said. "It's a chance for us to say, 'Thank you.'"

The First United Methodist Church, 917 10th Ave., will also hold a Veterans' Day service 6 p.m. Sunday. That service will feature a concert tribute to veterans, as well as patriotic music from the church's hand-bell players, according to Kathy Trevino, the church's director of operations. At least four veterans are also scheduled to speak about what coming home meant to them, Trevino added.

"It's a little different each year," she said. "But it's more than just a come hear the choir sing kind of thing."

Tickets are available at the arena box office starting at 5:30 p.m. on game day or at the Nottingham Field box office from 10 a.m. 6 p.m. weekdays. Family members are not eligible for free tickets.
