WHS softball blanks Sterling 5-0 to remain undefeated
September 9, 2009
STERLING – Megan Wilkinson continued to mow down hitters as she helped the Windsor softball team win its seventh game in a row in a 5-0 one-hitter over the Sterling Tigers on Tuesday.
Wilkinson struck out 14 Tigers, allowed a single and didn’t walk a batter for the Wizards (7-0) in the Class 4A Northern Conference contest.
The game was delayed by rain for about 25 minutes in Sterling, but Windsor got on the scoreboard by scoring runs in the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead. The Wizards scored two more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Wizards catcher Kelsey Tillery and Wilkinson, both seniors, hit triples. Chelsea O’Connor, Wilkinson and Chantelle Fobb knocked in the runs for the Wizards.
“Sterling’s pitcher was a lot quicker than we’ve seen, so I think it took our bats a little bit bit to catch up,” Wizards coach Sandi Cumings said. “We just didn’t produce the hits that we have been producing. But I think we were still pretty disciplined at the plate. We’ll only be seeing better pitching down the line.”
Cumings said Wilkinson (6-0) pitched a strong game with an effective changeup. Wilkinson has struck out 27 hitters in the last two games against Greeley West and Sterling.

“The past couple of games I think she’s been throwing harder, and her pitches have been working,” Cumings said.
The Wizards have outscored their opponents 89-2 in the first seven games of the season.
The Wizards’ next game is at 1 p.m. Friday at Barnes Field in Loveland at the Berthoud Tournament. Windsor also plays at 7 p.m. Friday, and will play again Saturday at the tournament.
